Pictures from the 2006 Idaho Trail Ride
No deaths, no drownings, no snake bites, no broken bones, no jail time, no poisonings - just good times! A few breakdowns including a DualMatic hub on John Eickhof's M-37, a punctured engine oil pan on Jame's GMC, a broken steering arm on Digger's Toyota, failed brakes on Mike's Jeep and a fuel tank full of water on Russ's Power Wagon.
Participants were John Eickhof in his M-37, Loren Todd in his 1/2 ton weapons carrier, Neall Irish in his diesel powered M-37, Digger Dan in his Toyota pickup, James in his GMC pickup and Mike in his Jeep CJ-7.
We thought we had lost Greg Duffy between Boise and Jarbidge, but he had the wrong date and was planning to come a week later. We did make a long trip one day to see if he needed to be recovered on the nasty dirt roads between Boise and Jarbidge. The mud was about as bad as I've ever seen, but we all made it.
Crossing the Jarbidge River was another good challenge. Digger's Toyota was nearly swept away, but we managed to winch him back out. My '49 Power Wagon had the rear fuel tank filled with water when the filler neck went under water. I had to switch to the front fuel tank in mid stream, but the flathead 6 started by itself after being drowned by water, and I was able to winch out on my own. The engine was pouring steam out of the exhaust for a while.
We were hit by a ferocious snow squall on the top of Bear Creek Pass with near white out conditions for a short while. My auxilliary electric fuel switch chose that exact moment to go bad and fill the cab with thick white smoke. This was really bad because we were on a ridge line trail with sheer drop offs on both sides.
We made a run to the crater on the Matterhorn. Very beautiful place and a fantastic drive across Jack and Jenny Creeks and over the Island. We did see a lot of elk this year too. For the first time on an Idaho Trail Ride, we didn't see any rattlesnakes this year.
