  • Steering gear ID

I am trying to ID the steering gear in my '53 one ton FFPW. I don't think it is stock because the stock steering wheels will not fit on the shaft.

It is a long shaft ie the shaft runs in one piece from the lower end of the unit to the wheel. It looks like a Gemmer. The lower end is like the stock ones in that a square plate with a small tube attached to it bolts on the lower end and the bearing load is set with 3 fiber shims (kind of like gasket material).

The shaft is 1" in diameter, and overall length from the steering wheel threads to the bearing cone on the bottom is 41" The wheel end is tapered to 15/16" and keyed with a woodruff key. The unit uses upper and lower roller bearings at either end of the worm. The lower race is marked X-Timken and bears the number 18.

The worm, not including the bearing cones is about 3-11/32" long. The sector shaft is 1-3/8" in diameter and there are 3 sector teeth.
The unit is in 2 castings. One holds the worm and the other holds the sector shaft and the flange that bolts to the frame of the truck.

On the inboard side of the casting that holds the worm and shaft there is the number 17090 followed by a symbol that looks like a square cross followed by a 2.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
