where do i start looking for the timing pointer, drivers side or passenger side hood on or off
I guess I'm a little dense, but you'll have to ask this question in a little more detail before I could help much. At any rate the pointer is on the front of the timing chain cover, the degree markings are on the crank pulley.
on most engines you can see the pointer and the marks from only one side of the engine, I looked briefly from the drivers side and didn't see it but did notice the hood even when up could be a problem. So I was asking where the pointer was and where do you have to stand/look to see it. Does this help clarify the question.

The timing value applies at or near sea level only. The more elevation you gain, the more advanced you will need to go. If the engine starts pinging, timing is too advanced.
