Anybody know a source for new or NOS brake drums? Mine are worn to the end of serviceability, and VPW only carrys turned drums.

Good luck on that, as NOS drums would be quite rare. Good used ones will be your best opportunity.

There is a great market for new reproductions of those drums, but product liability is likely what prevents anyone from doing it. Hopefully someday.

Unturned used drums

The brake drums on M101 trailers are interchangeable with WC 3/4 tons, PW's, and M37 series.

These are hand applied parking brakes and usually they are in excellent condition. Some trailers may have been towed with the parking brakes applied which could result in them being overheated which could cause warpage.

All in all, this is still a good source of brakes drums, even though they might require being turned to correct warpage (out-of-round).

I heard a story about a machine shop that was turning and sleeving brake drums for oliver tractors. I thought it was a CRAZY idea.. yet the fella who was telling the story seemed to be ok with the idea, and installed some on his tractor...

Last time I talked with Sid Beck, he had some unused drums from the Greek Army's M37's. That was awhile back- at least a year ago. The best solution to the problem for road used vehicles is the front disc brake upgrade.

Be careful with NOS, these are so old now, many have been stacked in storage for years in various places, who knows how or where. Drums will warp in storage if they are stacked or if they aren't layed flat. I wouldn't purchase unless the seller was willing to refund in the event of such defects. Trailer drums really are not a good source either, most of them are turned drums and are so thin that a couple of hard applications will heat them up to the point of warping, then you are back to point 0.

Well, it sounds like NOS or trailer drums are about my only options, good ones or not. I really don`t want to do the disc brake swap at this point, so would rather try and find drums. Thanks for the help so far, I`ll call around as soon as I get a chance.

I know Sid doesn't have the drums any more because they are in my parts room.
Besides he no longer sells anything that I know of.
John at Midwest had a few left as stated.
To me your best bet would be check with Charles as he has done numerous disk conversions and probably has some very good used one's to sell.
He won't steer you wrong.
If Charles don't like what he see's, or has ,he won't sell it. It's scrap.
