  • 251 water pump bolts

I have a 251 engine in a 1961 FFPW. The engine had a 230 water pump on it. I have obtained the correct 251 water pump and casting that backs it to the engine block. When installing the four water pump bolts to the casting (not the casting to the block), should I use lock washers? Thanks.....Keith.

That would be fine, or properly fitted, hardened flat washers.

The truth is that split lock washers do not accomplish that much. Engineering tests have in many instances proven that.

Look instead at the relationship between the clearance hole and the bolt head. See if there is sufficient bearing surface for the relationship. Sometimes washers are useful in having a head engage with an excessively large clearance hole.

Why is it that the inside of old truck cabs smell so good?
