Brake Drums and Thicker Brake Shoe Linings

I've got a 66 WM300 with scored drums. I've read a number of posts here, and understand that if we turn these down past 14.220 they will be out of spec and won't work.

Is it acceptable and safe to use a thicker shoe to make up the difference for the drum?? I found a company in NJ that says they frequently make up thicker shoes for Power Wagon owners.

What are the pros/cons of this approach??

I don't want to do anything that would further reduce braking effort.

A thicker lining will not make the drum acceptable. The drum is unsafe if turned too large.

What you experience is becoming a more increasingly typical situation. The best fix for your situation is to change over to 4-wheel disc. Once in place, the disc system's normal wear components are easily obtained over the counter at any auto parts supplier. Does away totally with the impossible to find drum issue.
