I'm very happy to report that the temperature sending unit that screws into the block came out with no drama. I did some tests, and at 160' F is reads all the way to the right side is the "A" in HEAT. So at 160 it is amost pegged.
I then checked out an aftermarket mechanical gauge and installed that for last weekend. At 80 degrees and with 10 miles of 30-35 MPH driving it was getting close to 180, but really not above it.
So... I have a new sending unit on order. I hope that is it and not the guage.
I was happy to see that the engine indeed was not overheating, and as usual my worrying was all for nothing.
This weekend starts the oil leak fixes... First order of business is the valve cover gaskets, followed by the oil pan gasket. It has to slow the flood that looks like the BP oil drilling gone wild.
