  • Anyone use Edgy Speed Shop mods for 230?

Seeking someone using Edgy Speed Shop heads &/or dual carb intakes for PW 230 six? Thanks!

    Edgy Heads

I recently installed a new 230 aluminum head and aluminum valve covers from Earl Edgy. The head has 9:1 compression. He also did a mild custom grind on my new cam ( 260 dur and .410" lift ). I already had a vintage Edmunds dual carb intake. Only have about 500 miles on the engine so far, but am pleased with the performance. Head did require modifications to mount plug wire/coil bracket and bypass oil filter. It doesn't come with any holes for these attachments. If you have an internal bypass water pump, you have to drill out the required hole in the head. I used studs from ARP to mount the head, but you do have to make sure you use the "red" high temp thread sealant or you will have leaks - don't ask how I know :-)

If you order a new head, make it first on your shopping list. It takes around 12 weeks to get one from the foundry.

      Edgy Speed Shop

Many thanks for relating your experience. My '55 has recently been overhauled. With my mechaical inabilities I maybe should leave well enough alone and refrain from "fixing" something that "ain't broke."

Please keep me advised on what you learn about the new head.

        Edgy

Will do! It did turn out very nicely, here is a pic of the engine installed.

          edgy

JHC, I have one of edgy's 410-260 cams, m series rebuild's electronic ignition and had the head shaved .060. I estimate I picked up 20 or 25 hp, it's well worth it.

Carbs you use & how much does Edgy get for heads?

What carbs did you use? I was told that the Offenhauser uses the standard issue PW carbs and comes with a linkage. From appearances only, the Edgy manifold appears to accept 2-barrel jobs. If it does, the CFM it seems, would be far greater than the 230 engine would swallow. Edgy's carb recommendations are quite expensive from Summit. Two would swallow a thousand bucks or more, it seems. I cannot get Edgy's phone to answer on repeated tries. I've left messages for a callback, but none is yet received. Perhaps he's on vacation....who knows....

Thanks for the replies from everyone. They help. Because I already have two standard carbs issued with '50 and '55 PWs, I'm leaning toward Summit's Offenhauser that's $100 bucks cheaper than that sold by the major PW parts people. Head would be from Edgy if they're still in production. What's his price for those heads, anyhow? He fails to list prices on his website: a great disappointment for my shopping tastes.

              carbs and price

              JHC1-

Since I had a vintage aluminum Edmunds intake, I went with carbs and linkage from Tom Langdon ( Langdon Stovebolt ) http://www.stoveboltengineco.com/ . I believe they are Carter/Weber 5500's which were used in the early 80's Ford Escorts. These were designed for an engine with 97 cu in which I felt was ideal for our 230 in a dual carb configuration. I also purchased his headers and HEI ignition which fit well. He is easy to get in touch with by phone, and was an engineer for Chevy flatheads in his past life. Very informative, and willing to discuss your options. The Edmuds is a tight fit on the Carter carbs, but I would think the Offy wouldn't have any problems. I thought about using the OEM carbs, but thought it would be too much for a dual setup. I also liked the idea of having electronic chokes. I think they ran about $180 for the pair. Of course, I had to order linkage, adapters, air filters etc on top of the carbs.

Edgy was difficult for me to contact by phone. I seemed to have better luck with e-mail ( edgerton@pacbell.net ) , still took a while to get a response but he did always get back to me. I think he must be out racing all of the time :-) My head was $725. Valve covers were $100, and the cam grind was $140. Shipping for all three was about $45. As I said in previous post, his lead time is about 12 - 16 weeks and requires 50% down before he will order it from the foundry.

Not trying to adverties for any particular vendor, just sharing the choices I made. I am sure there are lots of top quality people willing to help.

Like Matthew, I am very happy with the end result but it was a little more involved than I anticipated.

Here's a link to an Offenhauser with linkage for $248. This is the least expensive one I have found.

                    Edgy cam & head

Soon as I receive the written details on the major overhaul one of my flat-fender sixes, I'll contact Edgy again. Nice guy. He phoned and gave me all the details, and I plan to buy his stuff soon as I'm sure the recent overhaul did not modify block too much for his head. You fellows on this forum impress me!
