    What causes all the slop in the transmission. All the excessive play in the shifter. I've noticed the same problem on old beat up/ used hard farm trucks.

    The groove in the shifter ball where it sits in the top cover and the pin through the top cover that holds it in place via the groove, wear on each other.
    Also the tang at the end of the shifter that engages the forks wear.

    Top shifter is well worn,bottom one not so much.
    You can weld it up and machine back to useable condition.

      Don't mind at all Tom, thats what it is all about, helping.
      William, he covered it very well. Although I am decent with a mig welder, I wasn't confident with this, so I took the shifter over to a guy in my County who is a pro welder and he got the ball and slot back to looking like new.
      IT made a HUGE difference compared to the slop before.
