  • 230 Flathead help

Hi all, I'm totally new to this flathead World and need a little guidance . I need some engine internals, a rod for sure and possibly a crank. So I took a trek to a local wrecker and couldn't find a 23" block flathead. Are the ones up here in Canada all the 25" head? I looked at a multitude of different vehicles about 20+ and all were the 25" head. So my question is what components are the same from the two blocks?
    Rods
Crank(maybe a dumb one to ask but hey could be a weird lower casting)
    Intake man.
    Exhaust man.
    Water pump
    Anything else ?

Thanx in advance for any help.

        230 flathead help

The two blocks are different lengths so the crank shaft, cam shaft, water dist. tube and manifolds are not iinterchangeable. the dist. won't interchange either.

Since you are Cdn ( I am too) I'd suggest you change over and install the larger engine. It requires a few modifications but they are easy to do.

the parts availability is much greater here and you will have more power.

if I can help let me know

Sounds like going to the longer block may be my better option. I would certainly take any guidance in this matter. So what type of mods are we looking at to do this swap? I have to get an engine rebuilt so I guess it can be either the 23" or 25" block. At a local wrecker I found various implements, generators, grain trucks etc with the 25" block so there are tons of parts available locally. There were probably 20+ of these engines. Are there any years that were better then others if I was to source a donor block? I do happen to have a I believe a 1945 Canadian built military dodge vehicle. It has the 25" block and the same drivetrain as the PW. Though it has the single speed transfer case. Would that engine be a good candidate for rebuild? Any information you can fire back to be would be great. Also are there and pros/cons in taking out the 23" and putting in the 25".

            230 engine

Chrysler Canada used the larger block. They are plentiful as you have found out. They were used in cars, trucks, const. and agr. applications.

I'd go for the newer engine and if possible find one with the sodium exhaust valves. I'd do a total rebuild.

I have a 251 here in Churchill and had it totally rebuilt and balanced. My suggestion- don't cut corners or neglect anything.

Is your vehicle a flat fendered power wagon? I did the engine transplant in my '53ffpw. I moved the holes for the front engine mount saddle ahead two inches. I ground two pieces of steel to match the contour of the cross member, tapped them and welded them in place.

If you take the radiator saddle and turn it 180 degrees this will move the rad ahead the two inches. You will have to rework the upper tank for the filler neck to fit the hole in the piece ahead of the hood.

The bell housing, exhaust and most other items will bolt up

Yeah mine is a ffpw thanx for the info. I think I will go with the 25" block looks like just a motor mount and rad inlet fab.
