So I'm thinking my sending unit is no good...can't get a steady continuity between the contact that runs on the resistor coil and the ground side.Thinking of soldering braided wire between the two points to see if that might make a temporary fix. Is there a way to test my gauge to see if it will work without a functioning sending unit....some kinda resistor??
Thanks,
quinq
I use a company in Akron OH by the name of S U R & R Auto 1969 S Main 44301-2873 to rebuild the sending units in the 57-60 trucks I restore. They look brand new but usually cost around $159 for a full rebuilt unit. Yours may not be that bad.
The 47 trucks (42-51) use a two wire auto-lite thermostatic gage,
The gage has a bimetal strip that heats up has current passes through it from the sending unit causing the needle to move,unlike magnetic one wire systems in later trucks.
Ohm's in not really relevant here as it's more to do with current draw.
The two wire sender is only compatible with this gage from this era.
The scan is of poor quality but the top diagram is the one to look at and "service" on the lower left column is related.
Site won't let me post the scan because it's already posted here scroll down after page opens ;
