  • NP240... Stumped

I'm still plugging away with my rebuild. I can sure appreciate the time many of you committed to a frame up rebuild.

I'm rebuilding my NP240. It needed a new main pinion ( output shaft) I
found an NOS on eBay. The problem I'm having is I can't use the original
lock ring- it's too small. Everything is identical about the shaft
except the threads are slightly larger on the NOS. Is anyone aware of an
early and later version? I need a left hand threaded lock ring for this new shaft. The original was left hand as well but is .008 smaller in diameter. I'm stumped!

On another note, does anyone have the main shaft needle bearing dia end spec? The tolerance seems off. All bearings are new but I want to verify. Its the only one I could not locate in my manual.

    Thank you

It appears that one is metric (44mm) and the other English 1.750. You could make a new one, or have one made, although if you could find one in the parts book that would be the easiest.

Thanks Frank. I didn't know that both had been made.
I will do some more investigation for a part number.

Are we really talking about a New Process "240"? If you talking about a NP 420, maybe this guy can help. I hate to volunteer someone, but he is in the business and seem to know more than most: http://www.jobrated.com/

I don't know much about transmissions (or anything else) but I think the English/Metric thing comes up mostly in bearings where the newer bearings use metric measurements, but are (pretty much) interchangeable with the older bearings using English measurements.

There was more than one transmission called a NP420 and, like everything else, there were probably modifications made along the way, maybe even more than one manufacturer, especially among military items.

I think I've seen a number of these shafts for sale. Probably from military surplus.

Found the part I needed from Dave aKa.. Job Rated. He's very knowledgeable and friendly to deal with. Highly recommended when it comes to PW transmission and transfer cases parts and support.
          Thanks for your help everyone.
