  • non-syncro trans

I have a 1955 PW with the non-syncro trans. is it possible to convert it to a synchronized one or can I replace it with a later trans that has the synchronized gears. My wife loves to drive it but just can get the hang of double clutching.

You could use an NP 420 M37 transmission with synchro 3 and 4. I swapped one into my WDX.

The transmission will bolt to the PW bellhousing. Shift tower on the M37 transmission is farther forward than the non synchro so the center floor pan needs to be modified. The later M37 trans (NP420) is the one to use. Check the input shaft pilot bearing diameter and the length of the input shaft. Also check the diameter of the front bearing retainer (the part that pilots in the bellhousing). I did my swap 25 years ago so I may be missing a few details.
I can't remember if I had to do anything to the input shaft. It wasn't too difficult of a swap.
