  • MU-2 winch

My 47 WDX came with a front winch and over the years I was told different ratings for the winch from 5000 to 10,000 lbs. Is there different ratings for a MU-2 ? Also does the type of shear pin make a difference for the rating. I have a few pins made of what looks like brass that came with the truck.

MU-2 winch was rated at 7,500 lbs with 1/4" shear pin from 1946-1958. Same for the 3/4 ton WC and 1.5 ton WC 6x6 that preceded the Power Wagon. In 1958, winch rating was increased to 10,000 lbs with change to larger 5/16" shear pin. No change at all in the winch itself. Effective rating increases with fewer layers of cable on the drum. Good reason to spool out lots of cable and use snatch block as well. Proper shear pins in both sizes are available from Vintage Power Wagons and Midwest Military. Hope this helps.
