  • Original 16' Split Ring Rim & Tire Combo Options?

I've searched various threads on this topic. There's mixed opinions and mortification based on aftermarket rim combos. My intent was to dedicate a thread on this topic along with reference pictures you may have to share.

My project will be ready to consider new rubber and my preference is to keep the original split rings. I'm looking to see what brand and model of tire you have found worked best for your application-outside of the original NDT military tires.

I've attached a reference picture of the tire I would like to use on my build-they seem to have worked on this unit and appears they are the original split rings. Any ideas on the brand and model of tire?

I would love to see pics too. I hope to finish my truck over this winter and have it ready for the road next spring. I read a thread that Charles Talbert uses LT315-75R16 good year duratrac tires on original rims for his restorations. I will try to find the thread.

I saw that thread as well. Send us your pics, pros and cons guys on the rubber of choice.

        Ray:

I am sure the tires on the green truck are 11.00 x 16 Michelin XZLs. I have a set on my Flat fender and they look and handle nicely. They are difficult to locate. I recently saw some at a location in Corpus Christie Tx @$500 each.

        Worth in NC

I run Q78x16 it's on a M37 but hey you get the idea less then 300 each when I bought em. Only downside is they are bias and bounce after sitting for the first few miles.

Thanks Wnarron. Are these a 36" tire? I saw some listed on Ebay but they are 46"?

I like the look of those Tuko. Reasonably priced?

I got them for $289 per tire shipped through a online retailer. They are comparable price wise to other similarly sized tires for our trucks.

                  Here is another option...

Top pic shows the Yellow Sea 9.00x16 radials. The bottom pic shows Michelin 11.00x16 XZL radials.

The Yellow Sea tires are new manufacture and can be found here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/230973386301...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT.

The Michelin tires are no longer manufactured and are very hard to find.

Love the look of those Michelins XZL's. Thanks for the link.. a close contender.

I wonder if anyone has information on when they were last mfg- from what I gather 2007-2008? They were military purpose is my understanding.

No problem. Yes, they were military and I think the XZL's were discontinued in the mid 2000's. My set was the last set of "new" XZL's I have ever seen for sale. I purchased them about 4 years ago and they were manufactured in 2003. I have heard that they are still manufactured and sold in Europe, but don't know for sure.

The Yellow Sea tires are a clone of the Michelin 9.00x16 XZL's and are nice. They come with tubes and flaps also.

Is that the same truck after dually/flatbed conversion, or do you have a taupe fleet?

LOL! Nope same truck. Started with the 11.00x16's before I decided what I was going to do with the bed. I liked the look of duals so I decided to put a flatbed on it. I also find the flatbed more useful than the standard bed. I have the original bed on the shelf in case I ever want to change it out.
