  • Hand brake drum removal

What is the proper procedure for removing the hand brake drum? See photo. The bracket behind this that holds the hand brake cam snapped the ear off. Any ideas on how to fix that? Is this case cast or can I weld it back?

    Pretty straight forward.

Remove Brake band, cotter pin and nut in the center of the drum flange.
Drain some oil or put a pan under the drum and slide off.

Unbolt the support which I believe is cast.

Best to find a new or used from VPW or Other vendor.

I believe the parking brake band was originally made of asbestos, and I'd bet that many of them on our trucks are still original, so I recommend taking precautions accordingly. At least it's good to be aware of it.
