Running board brackets

Hey guys I have a question for you. What is the purpose of the wood inserts that go inside of the running board brackets? Its not for added strength, I would not think that would be needed, is it there to just take up room so debris doesn't collect in there and cause corrosion? Do I need to put these pieces of wood in the brackets on my truck?

Hi Karl

Yes, those blocks are needed, as they keep the running boards from metal-to-metal contact with the support brackets. Wooden blocks were also used to support the cabs in early models. Various materials have been used to replace these blocks but I have always used oak. The best thing you can do to extend the life of the brackets is to keep the drain hole clear so that debris can get out. I hose them out every time I wash the truck.
