  • Rear Axel

    Hello,

    I have a 1951 Power wagon.

I think I might have broken a rear axle. I was at a stop sign on a hill and when I took off something popped. Had to put front hubs in to get home. Any advice before I tear it apart?

Thanks in advance for your help,
    Rick

I think you will find the right (short) axle shaft has twisted off at or near the splines. Both shafts, as well as the broken stub, will need to be removed in order the pull the 3rd member. A thorough cleaning and inspection is in order to ensure no shrapnel is floating around in the 3rd member itself or the axle housing. If you haven't done so already, this is an ideal opportunity to check for worn bearings, chipped teeth, and spline wear in the side gears.

The removal of the broken end of the axle shaft can be accomplished by using a loop, or lasso, fashioned from some heavy gauge wire or a rare-earth magnet glued to the end of a wooden dowel.

Let us know how you make out

          Yes
had to weld a nut on the end and use a slide to get it out.

Been there, done that. Not the easiest place to weld a nut on in. Good work.
            I drive a DODGE, not a ram!

            Thanks,

It is always a tough job, but I do like to see how people come up with different ways to remove them.
