  • Steering wheel material

Hey guys I have a 1950 Power Wagon and am going to refinish the steering wheel and its not obvious to me what the material is that this wheel is made out of, is it rubber or is it plastic? I need to know this because it will dictate what type of paint I am going to use when I do this part of the restoration. Thoughts all appreciated!!

Could it possibly be what was called Bakelite? That was popular on civilian vehicles in 50s & 60s.

Bucky Bakelite is a very hard rather brittle material and very hard hence the brittleness I do not think this is bakelite on this steering wheel.

It was more common on cars. Trucks usually had metal (like a tractor) or metal wrapped with leather, rubber. Wood was used in ancient times. And the name thermoplastic has popped up in my research.

Have you asked over on dodgepowerwagon.com ? Those guys are super friendly & know everything about these trucks.
