Opinion Needed...

I am about to be in a position to do one of two things. Either rebuild my 727 tranny in my 78 Powerwagon w/ 318 and NP203 transfer case or purchase a new aftermarket one for it. This tranny has about 260,000 miles on it. I want to eventually get my truck back up to very roadworthy condition.
If you suggest an aftermarket version what do you recommend?

I'd have yours rebuilt by a reputable shop. Those "mail order trannys" are kinda assembly line jobs and they don't know/care if its going in a passenger car,bracket racer,tow truck or your 4x4. If you were talking 2wd or car I'd say it wouldn't much matter.

The 727 is a very good, durable transmission. I say rebuild it or have someone rebuild it for you.

Get thee to a drag strip, man! Check with the local Mopar racers that run slushboxes there and ask a few of them who to take your tranny to. If a guy offers don't take him up on it quickly, Just get his number, and check his rep with some other Mopar racers.

A well built truck tranny is almost identical to a well built drag tranny: hard quick shifts [a shift kit] add to the life of the trans, a hefty torque converter does wonders [much lower stall speed for a truck of course], race clutches are great for trucks, a high capacity tranny cooler is a must [B&M makes some great ones with a cold lube bypass], a deep pan helps protect from fluid starvation, some of the bearing upgrades are a good idea too. Tell the builder you want it built for full time towing.

If I was going to go to a particular race shop I'd choose A&A, one of the best, but because of his extreme quality and strong reputation on the strip: not cheap at all.

I guess the only other specific question would be what stall speed on the TC would you recommend.

I put a high stall in my '79 and didn't like it. If it were mine I'd go with a stock converter.
