Questions about a trans???

I just found a 92 one ton.The owner said it had a 5.9 ctd,and a 6 speed manual trans.Can anyone confirm or dispute this. I am going to look at it sat.
While I am here, How long or short can the shaft be from the output on a trans to the input shaft on a np 205 divorced transfer case?

I think that the 92 should have a 5-speed.

The '92 had two options from the factory: 518 automatic with overdrive or a 5-speed Getrag. SOmeone has converted it to ?.

Both have their shortcomings (don't they all) so its not uncommon toconvert to a trans of the PO's personal preference.

Could it be a 6-speed from a later Dodge?

It could be a 6-speed manual from a newer dodge. I know several who have done this, although it is costly to do.

About 2 foot seems best. The longer you get you'll reach a point to where you would want to upgrade to a larger tube/joints/yokes, particularly behind a manual tranny....I suppose one could go down to about 18", never been there.

Minimum length should be whatever it takes to get 2 u-joints and a slip. I used 1 double cardan joint with a slip yoke to the transmission, which I seem to recall is about six inches or so in length. The slip is essential to allow the two cases to move relative to each other without binding. I've seen a single u-joint used, but doubt that is a sound way to go due to the RPMs at which it rotates.

Yes I did check out the truck. It was a city service truck. I didnt get to drive it or here it run. The guy that owns the truck now, took the utility bed off the truck and managed to cut the fuel lines. The engine looked clean the oil and antifreeze looked good. So all in all I bought the truck for only a $1000.
I think the tcd will be nice in my 79 w 150 short bed. Thanks for the resonses
