  • Gvwr?

Just wondering what a W300 DRW is rated at? What year did they stop making the W400 or 500? I'm looking for something older and simpler to replace our 95 Powerjoke with. Sensors and hydraulic commponents keep going bad and I'm tired of the stupid plastic things that keep this truck off the road! Could you get a ext cab chassis cab in the W300-500 series trucks? I'm redoing the wiring on my 74 now, and I love the simplicity of it. Well once I got a good wiring diagram and started cleaning 30+ years of crud off everything ;-)

My 74 has a gvwr of 8000lbs. I've seen data plates from M880s that list the empty weight at 46xxlbs. Does that sound realistic? I can't get it to the scales til I finnish the wiring. But if so that's one nice theoretical pin weight....not that I would approach that much weight without severe upgrades to the axles, suspension and brakes!

The GVW is the weight of the truck PLUS maximum cargo/passengers, not the curb weight of the vehicle....I think back in the sweptline era (61-71) the W300 single rear wheel was rated 8000lbs & the dually W300 10000lbs. The flat fender WM300 was 8500lbs. I think....72-80 W300 & 80-93 W350 were I think rated at 10000lbs.....The W500 was rated more than 14000lbs, maybe 16 or 20, not sure...The W500 came in regular cab & crew cab configurations, minimum 157" WB some 175" WB or more, and they didn't come with "pick-up" type beds. Around 74 the W500 became W600 when it adopted the lifestyle cab that the 100,200,300 had began using in 72. The W600 was dropped around 77. W300's in the early 70's were mainly all chassis/cab models.W300's had 9' beds pre 72 and 8' thereafter. The exception being the crew cab ones which usually had the shortbox (6.5'). The W400 showed up around 78 and probably was mainly used in special applications such as fire truck type uses..The M880 was called 5/4 by the military but is basically a W200 with 24 volt electronic & some other military only features.

Well it looks like I need to track down a W300 or W400 with a wheelbase long enough to put a ext cab on. 10,000lbs would give me a nice cushion of cargo(tools+spare parts+fluids) aux fuel and winch/ air compressor + tanks. I'm looking for a chassis cab to direct mount a 20-22k 5th wheel to. 72-75 to stay away from the EPA smog crap. Possibly later year models, since I'm almost positive the EPA didn't rate trucks over 10,000lbs anyhow? Not 100% sure though.

I have a 16k 5th wheel going on my 74. I just have to remove the bed and weld the rails on and add a ramcharger tank in place of the spare. I have found a 2003 F350 D60 front I'm installing with a E350 10.5 disc brake rear. Should be perfect for a 2 car trailer when I'm done building it up.
