  • Question about voltmeter 1979 PW W400

I have just bypassed my ammeter due to the neat little fire it caused behind the dash. However i have a few questions about that. For a while i was getting the rotten egg smell and found that all water was boiling out of my battery. So i changed the voltage regulator, and installed the volt meter at the same time. I found a lead that only came on when ignition was on, and now when i run it i notice my volt meter sits at about 15-16, and when giving any gas it pegs 18(highest reading). Is this normal, or should i be looking for a short or bad ground?

I think that's too high, but don't know where to look for the cause.

      12 Volt System

If you test with a good multimeter like a Fluke you should get just under 13 volts at the battery with the engine off. This will jump up to just under 14 volts with the engine running. Sounds like you have a voltage regulator issue.

        Hmmm

Well shucky darn, this is the 2nd voltage regulator i have put in the **** thing in 6 months or so....so i am at a loss at where to start. I have cleaned my ground wire and all, and before i had alot of wires that went nowhere(had all kinds of flashing lights and stuff) so i removed all of those that i could find that went nowhere....

So am i looking for a bad ground somewhere or a short...or possibly both?

I'd like to rewire completely, and know that it will be a task!

What kind of voltmeter was it? I installed one of those autozone specials years ago and it always read about 17 volts. When you put a multimeter on it was about 13.1 volts. Your voltmeter might be wrong. Check it out with a good multimeter before you go rewiring the truck.
