  • Military Wrap Front Leaves.

    Greetings All!

I have a 1972 W200 that has seen a lot of backwoods work but I was curious if anyone here has seen any other powerwagon 1972-1993 with Military Wrap springs on the front spring mount.

My W200 has a 5 leaf pack on the fronts, with two equal sized leaves on the top, both of which wrap around the front spring eyelet...

Just curious if this is a custom job or if some of these came from the factory this way...

    Possibly a crewcab thing.

      nope, no double wraps here

74 w300's six pac single wrap.
77 m880 w 200 three pac single wrap. that was a letdown I expected to find more beef.
712edf may be on to something there with the crew suggestion. I have a 75 w200 crew out at Rons place. I hope it has the double wrap. seems like overkill but thats what I prefer. too much is just enough. hey Ron could you take a peek under "Miss Canyon Rose".
Would a heavier 400/ 440 motor require more springs???

        now you got me looking

should the front spring packs be 180 degrees flat? I hope so because all three that I looked at are flat level.

From what I understand as far as the diesel W trucks 1989-1993 at least the Front leaves should be neutral to slightly negative arch from the factory / stock...

Even my W250 Diesel Club Cab has single wrap!!

The Crew in question had a 360 in it from the factory, so the 400/440 theory is out...

When new should have slight positive arch (bent upwards on the ends), then they sag til flat, then finally may get a negative arch. 90's Ford 4x4's (250 & up) came new with negative arch.

My 78 club cab W200 has a dana 60 front and about 6 leafs per side. I think they are single wrap & yep they are flat. The rear eyelet is actually contacting the frame from the springs being mashed flat (thus elongating them).

M880's didn't even get the heaviest stuff offered on a W200, that being the Dana 60 front and 6 leaf springs. That 5/4 ton designation given by the military is typical of their nomenclature.

My 84 RC and my 73 crewcab all have standard wrap springs. I've got a set of chevy springs with a military wrap that will be going into the crew though.

oh wow your m880 has the military wrap springs? My 1972 W200 Crew has sagged to slightly negative arch even after adding a 6th leaf from the 1990 W250 Diesel... But the rig is almost done drivetrain wise... Just need to do the interior , HVAC and MAYBE a bit of body...

My '77 880 originally had those military wrap springs and 3 leaves with a negative arch.

I am picking up a 1972 W200 which was a national guard factory plow truck, has the double springs in question. Though only a D44 in front, surprisingly! I would have thought a factory military plow truck would have had the D60 :(

I am getting it sometime next week. If I recall, it has at least 5 springs up front

PEPECAT - what turbo is that? And did you make that intake elbow?

                            Back on topic (kinda):
I thought all diesels started off with an arch but then sagged to negative no?

                              The 60 front wasn't available til 1975.....Only 44's & 70's were offered in 72.
