Tyre / Rim compatibilty question, Please Help!

Hello folks.

This is only my second posting, so please be gentle with me OK!!!!

I have an ex-USAF Ram D250 which is apparently rated at 1 ton because of military spec upgrades.

A simple question really, but please bear in mind that the knowledgebase here is practically nil, so what may appear as a numpty question is something I'm struggling to get an answer for, so here goes!

The standard steel rims on my truck (which I like) are 16.5 x 6.75, and are currently fitted with 9.50R x 16.5 tyres.

16.5 tyres are not available on our little island, but a set of used tyres have popped up on eBay, which if compatible I would like to bid on, hopefully win, and then fit on my standard rims.

The tyres are Cooper Discovery 33 x 12.5 x 16.5, and my simple question is, will they fit my standard steel rim OK??

the tyres [tires] will fit just fine but will bulge a little because a 12.5 tyre[tire] should have a 8 inch rim but your 6.75,s will be OK

They will fit the rims fine. Other than the above noted bulge the other issue I can think of is fender clearance in a turn. The rear is fine but the front might bite the fender on a tight turn or in a twisty spot.

Unfortunately I didn't win the tyres (tires!!) so I will have to keep looking.

16.5 inch rims are unheard of in the U.K, and tyre fitters think you're mad until you show then the tyre markings. Obviously they can be obtained at premium cost, but I'm not in an immediate need just yet.

16.5 inch tyres

Hi Rob,

Your problem is similar to mine. My 1983 W350 was fitted with 17.5 inch rims with 8 lugs in France before being sent as an airport fire tender to Zimbabwe - where I currently live.

Continental and Michellin make 10R x17.5 tyres but each costs US$ 630!
I have been advised to change to 16 inch rims but it is difficult to find those rims with 8 lugs in this part of the world. So I am still on 17.5 inch rims and still looking around!

The correct rim for a 12.50 tire has to be at least 9.75 wide!!

I'm guessing it's probably very easy for you to get rims and tires in your location!

Here in the U.K (and I'm guessing Zimbabwe) 16.5 inch rim sizes are unheard of. Sure there are some American vehicles that use them, but you average tyre fitter has never heard of a 16.5 inch rim.

Getting the tyres is possble but you have to pay a massive premium for them.

I did not win the used 16.5 BFG's on eBay, so I am now keeping an eye open for another set, or some 8 lug rims in a 16 inch diameter which would make it a whole lot easier for me to source tyres.

Unfortunately, with our current world economic crisis, getting parts new or used shipped from the U.S to the U.K is so expensive it's not worth it.

If you find rims, make sure of the center hole diameter.
Ford wheels fit Dodge and Chevy, but Chevy will not fit Ford or Dodge.
Chevy wheels will fit the front but will not clear the rear axle hub.

Most all after market wheels,have the larger opening (aluminum and the spoke type)

Tyres/Rims compatibility

I had found this below article in either Dodge Trucks or Dodge Talk website forums. I have pasted it below. This article helped me from going for any Ford F-250/350 8 stud rims. It might be useful to you too, I hope!

Dodge 00-up 2500, 03-up 3500 single rear wheel, 94-99 Ram 2500and 93-back D/W 250/350 single rear wheel has an 8-6.5" bolt pattern, 5.15" bore and are stud centered.

Dodge 94- to present Ram 3500 dual rear wheel have 8-6.5" bolt pattern, 4.78" bore and are hub centered.

Dodge 93-back D/W/B 350 dual rear wheel have 8-6.5" bolt pattern, 4.75" bore and are stud centered.


The late model from 99 and up single rear wheel Ford 250 and 350's have 8-170mm bolt pattern, 4.93" bore and are hub centered.

From 97 on back (no 98s were made!!) F250 and 350 single rear wheel and 2004 and earlier E250/E350 single rear wheel vans have an 8-6.5" bolt pattern, 5.15" bore and are stud centered.

Ford 05-up F-350 Superduty dual rear wheels have 8-200mm pattern, 5.6" bore and are hub centered.

Ford 99-04 F-350 Superduty dual rear wheel have 8-170mm pattern, 4.93" bore and are hub centered.


Ford 84-97 F-350 dual rear wheel (Production from 01/85 - for trucks built 12/84 and prior use 8-6.5" pattern, 4.75" bore, stud centered), 84-up E-350/450/Superduty dual rear wheel (Production from 01/85 - for trucks built 12/84 and prior use 8-6.5" pattern, 4.75" bore, stud centered) use 8-6.5" bolt pattern, 4.88" bore and are hub centered.


Depends on what truck you are wanting to swap with. In short, with the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks.... maybe!

Very very good info,
There is something that I forgot to mention but it is in refference to the
D & W 300's with dual wheels.
Dodge wheels are coined and Ford is not.
Therfore you will get death wobble in the front because of them not being centered on the hub.

Oops, Sorry!

In my last post, I wrote that the article that I pasted helped me going for any Ford F-250/350 eight stud rims. Sorry! It should read "helped me not going for any....." !

Therefore, I have stuck to my 17.5 inch rims but am looking for the correct 16 inch rims of a F-250/350.
