Remove Plug for Temp Guage

What do you use to remove one of the plugs to put an aftermarket temp guage in?

If your talking about a threaded plug some use an allen head and some use just a 3/8ths ratchet and/or an extension.

3/8ths does not fit in mine. I have tried to find a parts house that carries something this size with not luck?

Bigger than 3/8?

Smaller than 3/8?

Smaller than 3/8ths and bigger than 1/4.

I've ground down the sides on a cheap extension to get some of those.
