  • Immediate HELP PLEASE!!!!

Hey there guys I was trying to drive my 77 power wagon W200 Automatic from my house to the beach. I almost got there but as I was going around 45 I noticed that as I began to slow down it would shudder lot and pull to the right. Then it just cut out on me. I just replaced the starter and battery and had it going great today. I really dont know what happened please advise guys because as of right now it is stuck inside of a crappy Wal-mart parking lot waiting to be screwed with.
    A million thanks in advance.

Need more help but am closer to a resolution

Okay gentleman, After about an hour of driving in circles in a Wal-Mart parking lot I have finally gotten the car back to my house and figured out at least what appears to be the problem. Whenever I am driving the truck and turn on the lights, hit the wipers turn signals or brakes the car sputters out and dies. It seems like I may have a short somewhere in the wiring in this car. Has anyone encountered a prioblem like this before if so please advise. Thanks

good clean grounds are always a good troubleshooting starting point.

I know up here where I am.. I can take my vehicle to a parts store and they will test my charging system for free... It is possible that your alternator is buggered.

I dont think it is the alternator is the issue soley bc the truck runs and idles just fine, the only time I get the shudder and stall is when I turn on my headlights. As soon as I pull out the stick to turn them on the car just starts to die out. It's odd bc the guy who we bought it from said something about no longer using the voltage regulator, from the looks of it the only thing that it was being used for was a ground from the battery to the chasis. In its place he seems to have this little module on the drivers side wheel housing. I'm not sure what it is but I removed the voltage regulator and the truck still starts up just fine. Seems like I have some wiring grimlins that won't go away. But I am going to go outside and clean up the leads and see if maybe that helps.

Here is a picture of the part that I think is causing the problems for me. When you move some parts of it around the truck seems to start working differently.

These trucks have always been plauged with electrical problems. My Dad had a 77 that had issues we never did resolve. I'd look at the firewall connector to make sure it's clean and fitting tight. Make sure you have a cab to engine ground strap also. These are usually behind the passenger side head. If the grounds are clean and tight along with the cab connector it should help. You are dealing with a 32 year old wiring loom. Hope you get it figured out.

... If you turn on the headlights, it is adding a load to the electrical system.

Therefor it could actually be your alternator is working 100% as it should.

A battery can run a vehicle without a charge for awhile.. Have done it in the past when the alternator has died on highways.

As for that picture, you have to right click on the picture.. And click on "Copy Image Address"

What makes it pull to the right? Thats got to be totally seperate from your other problem.

You removed the regulator?!?! Thats got to be part of the problem. If your alt is bad/weak then the battery will start it and run for a while until it runs out of juice - especially if there is no regulator to control the system. Is the batt dead when the truck quits?

I second the crappy wiring point with these trucks. I always carry a spare regulator, ECM and that little ceramic springy thing I can't think of the name of right now.

Remove, clean and tighten your grounds - even if they "look" good. The voltage guage is another weak link in the sytem.
