  • pecking noise in my 75 w100

my 75 powerwagon 100 [318/727/fulltime 4]has started a pecking sound while in drive or reverse.I pulled the belts to make sure it wasnt the water pump or alt.and checked the balancer. It still pecks but only in d or rev but not in park.Thinking maybe tranny but it shifts fine.Any thoughts and suggestions appreciated.

Is the sound engine rpm related or vehicle speed related? If while in motion you shift to neutral, does the pecking stop?

It does it stopped and when moving. It done it in neutral while ago but when you go to reverse it stops until you give it some throttle under load[brakes pressed]then it does it again.it increases as the rpms go up but in park it doesnt do it even at high rpms.

Listen to the rear of the transmission when you're hearing the noise. I think you might be listening to the parking pawl lever pecking on the locking gear. You put it in park and the noise disappears because the parking pawl is locked on the gear. Take it out of park and you hear an intermittent ticking noise that's rpm sensitive. I don't know what you could do about it but try it.

The noise is coming from the tranny front or rear of engine, above the fly wheel cover.I think it may be a flexplate issue.I have heard of them cracking and or the bolts getting loose.I'm gonna pull the the tranny back this week and see if thats it. Thanks for suggestions

curdogman, check the converter bolts closely, it could be one of them pecking on the back of the block(loose) Dave.
