does the 318 motor mounts fit on 340 and fit in the 1983 W150 ?
hello Ron in Indiana and guys........
that's true but I am LEAVING the nazi state soon and wanted to know what my options are. I think living in Montana or Wyoming don't have stupid smog laws like in california but i am all for the clean air as i have bad asthma. Its the nazi state that take smog laws and dump "common sense" and exchange it for profit. I am going to be putting in fresh motor after we move and make the truck unique some way so i thought that 340 would make it special and different from the rest of the crowd.
The 340 is a good engine for a car but not much of a truck motor. You'll want to run a 4 barrel on it to get the most out of it. A Mopar guy will give you enough for that 340 to put a remanned 318 in your truck and everything will be good to go. I think you'd be happier with a rebuilt 318 in the end.
Hello Ron in Indiana........
is a 318 a better motor for the truck ? I see that the 318 has a 3.91 bore and 3.31 stroke and the 340 is 4.04 bore and 3.31 stroke i wondered ? The other day i went shopping in my truck and coming home on the freeway i didn't know i was going too fast (75) and by the time i realize that then "whoa" i slowed down to 60 and i was very surprised that the old 217,000 mile 318 2 barrel can push that fast as its getting tired (little blue smoke on start up) and i thought a 340 would do better on freeways than 360 due to shorter stroke. I thought short stroke motors like to rev up !!!!!!!and do well on the freeways as i do most of my driving on freeways. I found a old 1983 specs. the 318 2 barrel makes 260 foot pounds of torque down low 1600 rpm and lot less now due to mileage on it and using some oil. I know the 360 will make more torque but its balanced on outside the crankshaft ( balancing weight on torque converter ) and i wanted to use the same converter that came with the 318 and thought the 340 is balanced inside like 318 is thus making the swap easier. perhaps you have some better ideas ?
Tiffy's w150
At 217,000 your 318 is tired but not out. Valve guides and seals are worn so are the rings most likely. The 340 is externally balanced but I'd still stay with a 318 or 360 truck engine. The 340's were higher reving motors. My brother had one in his 74 Duster. It had a Thermoquad carb on top with huge secondaries that kicked in when you romped on it. I still believe you could almost get a remanned engine from the sale of the 340. Who knows advertise a straight across swap for one and see what happens. 340's aren't growing on trees.

you could also sell the 340 and drop a 360 into your truck only difference would be torque converter everything else you could run but if you go 4 bbl you will get more out of the truck in general
I would gave to agree to sell the 340. Check the casting numbers on the block, you may have a real gem on your hands. The 318 is a great engine, tough as nails and reliable as they come. For a truck I would lean towards a 360. More torque and with the right gearing and tire size get as good or better fuel mileage.
