  • "Fixed" a buddies 92 Diesel- Won't Start.

    On a '92 Diesel (1st generation)

I adjusted the bracket for the brake switch. It had really gotten bent to the side wasn't working (brake lights on all the time).

After my "fix" the truck won't start.

Any ideas on what is I most likely did?

Can I by-pass everything and just trigger the starter relay and fuel solenoid.

    Thanks.

Is it a standard or auto? If its a manual could you have messed the clutch lock out switch up? They won't start with out the clutch fully depressed. I've not worked on one but I'm assuming the switch is down there by that brake light switch.

How in the world did he bend that anyway???

Is that a '92 or a '92.5? They changed mid year and I'm not as familiar with a non-intercooled CTD. You can run a hot wire to the fuel shut off to get it running but nothing else will be working that way. But you could at least move it I guess.

KRB, the change happened on January 1, 1991. Until that date they were not intercooled, and after they were as you stated. I wouldn't think that it would matter, as far as the clutch switch is concerned. I would also make sure that the fuel solenoid wire, which I believe is blue, is making good contact on it's spade terminal on the solenoid itself. Doug

Thanks for the clarafication. I meant '91 or '91.5.

Good point on the fuel solinoid wire. They can be pretty loose and come off easy unless you crimp them a little or something.

UPDATE- bad starter- worse warranty service!

After jumping out everything, a buddy of ours ( a young mobile mechanic) jumped power to the starter and it was D E A D.

          About a year and a half old, but D E A D.

Owner found the receipt and took it back to the selling service center and they tried to bamboozle him out of the "lifetime warranty" by saying they had purchased the company, and "now they were a corporation," and didnt have the responsibility to cover the unit replacement.

They reached a deal, but not without a major hassle factor.

Not many small-town mechanics who stand behind their work any more.

          Good news is it's running

So it was just a coincidence then? Those make troubleshooting troublesome...
