  • Need help placing fair value on '79/'80 W400

Driving a different road last week, I came across a Dodge service truck sitting behind some bushes. Service trucks are candy for me, especially a 70s vintage Dodge. Behold a W400! Wow!

The equipment is typical for the truck: cab & chassis with added Douglass service body, owner built rack, 360 V8, NP435, D60 & D70 with 4.88 gears. The hitch in my pricing-giddy-up is a Gear Vendors overdrive.

The truck has not been on the road in about 5 years but has me drooling nonetheless. Truck is operable, no AC, just the basic 'Custom' package.

What are the thoughts of the board? Help me try to value this beauty.

I would figure it at $2500-3500. depending on the mechanical condition. From what I see the body looks ok.

So I'm guessing it has NP205 behind that 435 & the GV OD is behind that?
I'd definitely say its worth $3000 or more (again, as oldmopar stated, assuming all is well mechanically). The OD adds value in my opinion, as does the service bed. I see crap (pre 90's) D350 service bed trucks listed all the time in the $1900-$2500+ range, but they don't sell fast.
If you are buying this to use it might be a good deal. I imagine even with OD mileage won't be great.
If you are buying to flip, I'd advise against that unless you can get it for a ridiculously low price. 95% of the general public just see that as a 35yr old work truck with nothing classic/special about it & will only offer you $900 for it.

      This may be the first W400 I saw that wasn't a firetruck/ambulance.

Man I love that thing! I'd remove the service body & put a flatbed on there. No idea as to value though.

It is a 1980 model, as it has part time 4 wheel drive. Awesome find. Hope you get it.

I thought all DANA 80s were part time?

Dana 80 is an axle. Dana does/did make transfer cases, but Dodge used New Process t-cases, as Chrysler owned New Process for many years.

If I can come to an agreement with the gent who knows the owner, stores the truck for him, that is when some decisions will have to be made. I would purchase the truck with the intent of keeping it, not flipping.

Big no on the flatbed idea. Overhead rack would go, to.

I would more envision swapping the winch & bumper from my Ramcharger, adding a 4" lift to the front, shackle direction swap on the rear, having some custom dually rims made from H1 rims and 37" tires mounted, and perhaps some Rod Hall style fenders for clearance over the larger tires.

He guessed it was a 1980 based on it being part time, which is when Dodge switched from 203 to 205s. But I thought all Dana 80 axles were part time regardless of the year made.

All the '75-'79 trucks were full time. Starting in 1980, they were all part time 4x4. There is no Dana 80 front axle. The Dana 60 front axle was used in both full time and part time applications.

The truck has a production date of 11/79. Yes, NP205 t-case, D60 front, D70 rear. Oh, and the front fenders I envision are not Rod Hall, but Walker Evans clones.

                        Sorry, I meant 60s not 80.

Walker Evans fenders are those that flare out wide?

Why is it that the inside of old truck cabs smell so good?

The Walker Evans fenders indeed are flared, but most importantly have a wider opening for a large diameter tire. Without a gratuitous lift or trimming a steel fender, voila clearance for 37" tire and only 4" lift.

Correct, for some reason I thought the heavier DANA 60s were always part time but I guess not.
