    Hi, first timer here...

I just purchased a 1978 Power Wagon club cab 4x4 W20 (I know, I thought it would be a W200 but, the tag says W20). Anyways, I can shift into 4 lo lock and 4 hi lock but, when I try in 4 lo and 4 hi I get a grinding noise. I'm all new to this as it's my first full time 4wd truck and all help is appreciated :)

What does when you try in mean?

Shift into those modes, or try to drive the truck forward?

Why is it that the inside of old truck cabs smell so good?

It's not a shift on the fly, be sure you are stopped and the drive train is not in a bind when you shift.
      I drive a DODGE, not a ram!

      Thanks,
      Will

I was able to put it in 4 hi without grinding but there seems to be slippage while it was at idling. I didn't drive it though. Could the differential need rebuilt inside the transfer case? Or, is there any adjustment that I could make? I haven't checked the fluid level yet. Thanks.

I believe disassembly is required and will yield important information.

            search" fulltime 4 x 4 for dummies"

I asked a similar question years back and got some great answers and explanations about how a fulltime xfer case works.

That model is designed to be driven in the Hi position. If it is making noise when shifting be sure that the transmission is in neutral and has stopped spinning the shaft. Sometimes you can shift from Hi to Hi-loc while driving but it may need a little force on the lever and may clunk when engaging. Be sure to check that the linkage is clean, lubed, moves easily, and is adjusted correctly. Worn mounts and twisted parts have an effect on these.

I have to sometimes shut off the motor to shift out of LO in mine. Backing up helps relieve the bind.

Check the oil or even better replace it. Its supposed to have engine oil in it and most put 90w or something in there instead.
