  • over charging off idle

hi guys my 73 over charges to full charge when I step on the gas I have changed the alt & regulator, melted the old regulator! I was told there is some kind of regulator behind the insturment cluster that can cause this problem ? or volt gauge? thanks in advance for any information its got to be something simple! I have un plug'ed every thing I though could causing it to trigger it to charge, my dash lite's don't work, I think the over charge could have blew it out! my dash is in rough shape any way. I have had problems with it fuel gauge, lites speed o.

    Do you have a voltmeter?

In the dash, or hand held?

What does it read at idle and what does it read above idle? How many volts?

I'm not really familiar with the wire diagrams of these things, but if it is a 3 wire alternator make sure the sensor wire is unobstructed and runs straight back to the battery. If the sensor wire is going somewhere that is experiencing voltage drop either through a bad ground causing high resistance or something else, it will overcharge.
