Let me pull my horns in.....There now!

Sounds like a pretty nice rig you're building! I've never used a 9" Ford axle but I hear that many do. I don't listen too hard when people try to tell me how to build MY TRUCK 'cause that's the bottom line, it ain't their's hah! So, it's YOUR TJ and it should be built exactly the way YOU WANT!

It's the finished product and the enjoyment factor that really count.

So, do you like the NV3550, or dislike it?

          • dislike a ton.... along story short the original was rebuilt 3 times and 2nd gear was grinding, the tranny shop got me a different case thinking mine may be junk so this one goes into 2nd gear and works but... still isnt right acts like their arent any syncros in 2nd some times. im just limping this one until i put a 700R4 in. il admit i blew the original one up speed shifting. but idk if i do put in another manual it will probly be an ax15 seems they are dam near identical but last longer.

              I guess I'll find out, I just installed a NV3550 in lieu of a T-5.
The AX15 is rated a tad lighter duty than the NV3550, both in HP and torque, by about 10%.

              • why did they use the ax15 behind the ho4.0 my buddy had a 91 cherokee and speed shifted for 3 yrs and his is still driving he sold it but still see it running around. thats dana 300 looks good behind that tranny lol. i cant really say my speed shifting was the problem but i can say it did it in im the 3rd owner dont really kno the history of the jeep came from MO origanlly at least the MO dealer decal was on it when my mom bought it. lol hard to belive this tranny went out at 40000 miles just on my year or two of speed shifting. a year or so ago i got a free history report thing tells you how many hits it has before you pay for the service just tells ya so many then when ya pay for the service it tells you what happened but i never went any further came up with like 8 or 9 reports that didnt make me happy im curious but havent forked out the cash lol

                • The AX15 was replaced by the NV3550, the AX is an Aisin unit and has to be purchased at a higher cost, the NV was, at that time, a division of Chrysler and was more economical to use and has a bit stronger torque rating.
The NV3550 was later replaced by the 6 speed.
But it's not torque rated as high as the NV3550.

                  • i heard that the 3550 was built in mexico is the reason for the quality to be low. ive seen alot of bad things about the 3550 one is they sound like the have marbles inside them. i knew asian was from japan they make all the parts for toyota, suzuki, nissan and exc. but for some reason the ax15 seems to be better quality than the 3550. theres some place named rockland gear i belive that makes an ax15 really stout! big price tag tho like 2000-2500. my 3550 is noisy. when u look at both the 3550 an ax 15 there identical just wonder if chrystler thought they could make there own and fell short. the 3550 aint cheap to rebuild, most places wanted 1200-1500. also the 3550 is similar to the dodge and gm 3500 gears are cut different. next time it goes il try 1 of three options ax15,the built ax15 from rockland or a 700r4. hey norm did you kno you can use your speedo out of your original jeep tcase in that dana 300? i learned that somewere lol

                    • also it apears your using a clocking ring for that 300 what advantages would that give me over just putting the 300 behind my tranny?

Could be your 3550 just needs an input shaft bearing? Didn't you say you ran it prety hard? Sometimes that can really beat up a marginal input shaft bearing. I've even snapped input shafts on NP435's with a 360 from too much power applied to too much load. Maybe worth checking out if clutch time comes around and you're not ready to buy another tranny yet?

The NV plant is in New York.
Aisin is the parts division of Toyota. Aisin is like Motorcraft to Ford, Delco to GM or Mopar to Chrysler.
That 300 is my original case (it's a CJ7) so yes it does fit my speedo...= ) I did rebuild it though, with a 4 to 1 low range. I do all my own rebuilding so the cost is just the parts.

The 3500 and 3550 are identical internally (except there are different gear ratios for different applications) the only difference is the 3500 has an integral bell housing.

The clocking ring is to raise the 300 back into the stock position. The NV231 that normally bolts to a NV3550 is rotated differently and the 300 would hang too low if you used the 231 mounting location.

                            • actually aisin builds the axles mater clys and almost all the mechanical componets for all the jap cars. my suzukis have all kinda of aisin parts axles mater cly's a toy i helped build is the same way. mitsubishi builds most of the electrical componets.

i was hoping to not have to use the clocking ring in my tj but i think you might of talked me into it. i didnt relize that 3550 was going into a cj7,my 300 will be goin into my tj so can use my elcronic speedo in the 300 so i ve read. is that a 4cly? looks like there is an adapter between the tranny and bellhousing. if it is a 4cly why not go 4.0?
