I know there are many Dakota specific forums around, one of the managers where I work is on one for his Dakota, and they tend to focus on newer areas -vs- us antique loving fools.
I've owned a Dakota in one form or another since 1989. I have two right now. And aside from some some shared parts, they really are a different animal than the other trucks. Smaller, easier to park in town, and the IFS makes for a nicer ride. I had a 4cyl that got 29/35 mpg. Not much of a work truck. More like a fun toy. I had a '93/V6 that would jump terraces like no other. Went through shocks, though. -grin-
I think for our sakes, they will mostly be fetch trucks and V8 donors. (But you'll have to replace the heads, as they're prone to cracking.)
Fuel injected power wagons, anyone?
How much interest is there in Dakotas? Should I create a Dakota forum?
Talk to me....
Not sure there are enough of them running around to cover with a forum. The 2nd generation was a very nice truck. They are being discontinued in a few weeks, if they have not already stopped production.

Due to lack of sales?

Why is it that the inside of old truck cabs smell so good?
Yes, sales have been poor and getting worse every year since the new design.
Each Chrysler platform, needs approx. 100,000 unit sales per year to remain profitable. Dakota was in the low 30,000, however it was viable because it shared a platform with Durango.
Starting in 2010 (the 2011 model) the Durango was moved to the Grand Cherokee platform, thereby sealing the fate of the Dakota. Chrysler could have moved another model to share that Dakota platform, but instead they will replace Dakota with a smaller "Lifestyle" truck, most likely built upon the Minivan Platform in Windsor.
The '87 Dakota I had was tiny compared to my '93. And the '93 is pretty small compared to an '07 model. I think they are almost the same size as the 1500 now.
They'd do well going back to a smaller truck. I could see a Cummins v6 diesel and a 6' utiline in a two seater with just enough room behind the seats for a duffle bag...
I had a 92 Dakota 4x4 I drove for 15 years. It was a great truck, very easy to manuver through traffic and park. The 3.9 V-6 never gave me any problems. The body held up very well too, no rust. At 172,000 miles I sold it to a friend. He took it up to 200,000 miles. I hear that a mining company owns it now and they drive it up & down a mountain. If they made that truck with a diesel I would but it again.
l have two DAKs at the moment and have owned several / my HOTROD is a 1996 that l call AUTOMAG / Mopar crate motor 380 horse 5.9 Magnum / 518 B&M transpacked tranny with 3200 stall / 3.55 geared 8 1/4 suregrip / Summit headers / throttle body spacer / true duals with 40,s / 1997 RAM Sport 360 PCM with chip / its my little Mustang Killer
personally l consider the dakotas complete dodge trucks and should be included on THIS board / no need for a separate one
