  • wiring issues (rear tail lights)

Been having a lot of fun on my old powerwagon. I put tags on it about a month ago and I've been driving it a couple of times a week since.
While I was scootin it through town today my local law enforcement gave me a friendly notice that my taillights weren't working properly. It really was a friendly notice no tickets were involved only told me to get it home and fix it. So that's what I've been doing since, only I've run into a couple of problems.
My truck does not have a stock bed on it, but a custom built flatbed. The bed is actually very nice and almost looks like a factory type job. The taillights are of the transfer truck variety that use a rubber grommet to hold the lens in place and the wiring plugs into the back of the lens. I went out to tractor supply and bought two new ones as the old ones were dingy and needed a freshen up if nothing else. The old lights would come on when the headlights were turned on but the left one would not blink for turn signals or come on as a brake light. The right light would blink kind of half ***** and the brake light did work. I figured it was probably a wiring issue maybe a bad ground or a sta-con connector loose but first I tried plugging the new lights in to see if they solved the problem. No luck. Then I started looking at the wiring under the truck. what a mess. It looks like someone used the wiring out of tractor trailer or something. There are two groups of wires coming to the back of the truck both with enough wires inside to run all the functions of the taillights. One of these sets of wires runs to a trailer light hookup. the other is run for the tail lights. the one running to the tail lights has a connector which splits off into the two different sides and about a dozen different connectors and was a real mess. I made up new wiring harnesses for each of the tailights and ran them to this connector doing away with all the old screwed up butt connectors thinking this would probably solve the problem but it didn't. That's when I started looking at the wiring all the way back to the firewall. Even bigger mess. The wiring has shorted out in a couple of places because it was laying on the exhaust pipe and it also looks real crazy how it was connected to the firewall wiring. This is where I hope to get some help from somebody on this board. Could someone please post a pic of how the wiring at the firewall is supposed to look. I don't think the junction block on my truck is anywhere close to what came from the factory. I'll try to post a pic of mine tomorrow. can't today because my wife has our camera and she's at work right now. Or if someone has a wiring diagram that would be great too. thanks

    What year?

Welcome to the world of owning a Dodge my friend!!!! I can't speak for the military or flatfender versions, but ALL of the sweptline & lifestyle era trucks suffer from two major issues. Rust & bad wiring. Seems all previous Dodge owners were electrical brainiacs. It's sometimes best to remove all wiring from the truck & go through it piece by piece.

Exactly what year truck are you talking about?

You are at the right place. Most everyone here has dealt with wiring issues.

      It's a 70 model cab on a 71 chassis with a homemade flatbed. Kind of a frankenstein's monster.
I think I'm going to go the route of ripping it all out and redoing it at least as far as the rear lighting is concerned.
other wiring oddities I've noticed so far are switches in the dash that seem to go to nothing, and a remote solenoid on the inner fender that is not wired up to anything either.

Took out all the old wiring to the rear taillights yesterday and figured out what had been done to the wiring. Found out that the factory reverse light switch on the transmission is still hooked up and functional just not hooked up to the rear lights. As a matter of fact there isn't even a backup light back there so I'll have to address that also.

You might look on moparnorms website. There are wiring diagrams for the swepline era trucks. I downloaded a diagram for my '61 Town wagon and it proved very valuable. It's called Sweptline.com
