  • 1972 D600 w/ Hopto Backhoe

I thought you folks would appreciate the D600 we just picked up. It has a Hopto backhoe attached that is powered by an Allis Chalmers 262 gasoline engine.

Some of you might remember the W500 I posted up a while back. The Hopto rig was originally installed on that cab and chassis so hopefully one day they will reunite.

Anyway, enjoy the pics and let me know what you think!

Not a W series but the idea has been around for a while.
Found this wdx-wm power wagon in SE. MO. several years ago.
Not sure what ever happened to it.
I guess there was a need for these back in the day.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. While I love motoring around town and forest alike nothing gets my gearhead blood moving like doing some work with vintage equipment. Sometimes it seems like we have more fun in a day of using the '67 D600 dump truck than ripping around in the big block 4-speed Charger.

We were really happy to have an opportunity to bring 'ol Hopto back to life.

Next time you see it we'll be digging lots of holes!

FWIW Hopto's original intent was to clear irrigation ditches. The lore has it that they dug everything from graves to septic systems over the 40+ years Hopto lived near Hatfield, OR.

It's going to be a good summer!

              A HOPTO update:

The 361-2 in the D600 fired up after an oil change, fresh rubber fuel lines, fresh fuel and some lube in the cylinders. I'm working on gathering up parts for the clutch and brake hydraulics.

Unfortunately the Allis Chalmers G-262 engine is stuck as stuck can be. I have the head off and boy do the cylinder sleeves look ugly. Hopefully I can find a replacement AC G-262 in lieu of yet another time consuming and costly venture of dealing with machines shops that like to store your parts over repairing them.

Any of you fellow gear heads have any ideas?

Thanks for keeping an eye out!

A little fall update on the HOPTO D600. I found a used G-262 Allis Chalmers 6 at Draper tractor in WA and thanks to their helpful staff it's now here in So. Oregon on a pallet. Once we all get caught up I'm hopeful that we can swing the new excavator mill up there with the boom truck and see what this 72GPM 3-vane pump can do on a 21' arm and 3/8 yd. bucket combo.

It's a slow process, but in the end we will be digging big. Anyone out there seen any good digger or self loader W trucks over the summer?
