After owning my truck for over 25 years I find out the 3 speed manual transmission calls for automatic transmission fluid as lubricant. It never had anything but gear lube in it .It leaks some as well ,seems transmission fluid would leak a bit more. Anyone know why automatic transmission was used.

Either will work. Where did you read that it called for ATF?

In the shop manual under lubrication ... It lists automatic transmission fluid Type AQATF-2351 A suffix A and it states SAE 90 multi purpose gear lube may be used in warm climatesComment

In a 1979 owner's manual it lists ATF for the 3-speeds & the 833 4-speed, and lists gear oil for the 435/445 4-speeds.
