  • Opinions needed on 66 Power Wagon

I'm going to take a look at a 66 Power Wagon W200 tomorrow. My knowledge of the pre 72 trucks is limited so I would like any opinions you guys can offer me. Here is the ad:
    http://reading.craigslist.org/cto/986842019.html

It looks like a 69 and up front end to me though. Also, tail lights from a Jeep? The non correct front end isnt a problem to me, and I'm assuming I can find proper tail lights. I understand the steering box location in these is less than ideal, and it should be a poly 318. I would probably ditch the plow and plow frame. Does the price seem too high? The seller says the body is nice but has some rust. Any opinions on price or anything else is greatly appreciated.

the price is up to what somebody wants to pay for it. personally, i think its alitte high unless the floor of the truck is really solid. they tend to rust around the front cab mounts. does it have pushbutton door handles or fridge type? looks like a 70 or 71 grille. if he had a pic of the dash, i could tell you better. they changed the dash in 69. but it does look like a nice old ride and the plow is worth something.

thanks for the reply. I will really check out the floor and where it meets the rocker. I will also inspect the cab mounts really well. Hoping for the best, but they usually look better in pics than in person so we will see.

What is it about the front end that makes you think it's a '69 and up? And if it is, it's still a good year. The old 318 poly went away long before then, but the rest of the truck should be good. The plow is likely worth around $1000-1500 if it's a hydraulic angle and in good shape. From the guy's description, it sounds like you should wear some hip boots to get through the bs. :)

The hood is '69 & up. The grill is '68 & up. It might also have later front
fenders on it from the looks of the side marker lights ['70-'71]. The thing
I THINK I see that makes it an earlier [pre-'69] cab is the opposing wiper
arms.... if my eyes aren't failing me LOL. Appears worth a look though....
check floorboards, rocker panels, cowl, core support, hood lip, cab roof,
door skins and frame for "tin worms"....

I wish the plow was off of the truck for one of the pictures so you could see the grille better. I see what you mean about the hood. It's the same as the hood on my '69 W500. But I can't see the wipers either. :) It's possible it was wrecked at one time and later sheet metal used?

I did get a chance to look at this beast a few weeks ago. It wasn't as nice as in the pics, but pretty solid overall. It has had some not so great bodywork, including a weird looking fiberglass patch on the driver's side rear wheel arch. The floors were redone in a combo of fiberglass and metal, they could stand to be redone, but I don't think it would be a huge issue (I've done floors berfore). Cab mounts looked solid, hood lip solid, roof solid. The doors could be readjusted for sure. The engine fired right up, and it seemed to run decently. I did not drive it that day as the weather sucked. At that point he was asking $4000, which I thought was too high.
He has since lowered the price to $2800, and I am going to look at it again with a friend of mine who really knows what to look for. Here is a link to some pics on my site, please give me more opinions on this thing, it looks like it's a mutt of body parts, but I'm not concerned about that. Someone even put in a larger back window. The pics:

I saw that truck when he had it ebay and it looked like it had a mix of parts from different years. I was thinking of looking at it but picked up the 59 w200 instead so decided not to. When I saw it it was on ebay at $3000. and did not sell. He also had a comment about some front end problem on the ebay listing so be sure you drive and check out the front axle real good

thanks for the reply oldmopar. Interesting that it was on ebay for $3000 and it didnt sell. I spoke to the seller last night and he told me he was going to put it on ebay in a few days again and start it at $2800. Maybe he would bite at $2500...
It dies seem to be a mix of different year parts the more I study the old PW's. I just need to find out if it was due to fenders and the hood having rusted out and being repleaced with whatever fit, or if it was in an accident. He told me he got it from his neighbor who had it for like 30 plus years, maybe I can talk to that owner and get more of the story. The seller claims he bought it as he thought it was acool old truck, but I know he has no idea on what is what on old PW's.
Thanks for the heads up on the front axle as well, I will check that out. Hopefully it's just worn out front end parts, and not something to do with the frame! Any idea of when it was listed on ebay, as in how long ago?

Thanks for the link, hmm 0 bids at a start price of $3000 interesting. It looks like the only thing mentioned in the ad is that it needs drag link ends, not a big deal. I know this guy isn't overly savvy though, and his ads are bs lol. I need to go look it over better and do a little poking and prodding. Looks like not many old PW's are selling on ebay as of late. Maybe I could talk him down to closer to 2 grand, or let him run it on ebay again to see if it sells, but I bet it won't. Then he might be more willing to bargain. The guy isn't hurting for money the way it seemed to me, he had a gigantic new house with a decent amount of land. He flat out told me he doesnt have to sell it, but from the looks of things he is itching a bit more as of late to get rid of it.

In todays world a guy with a gigantic new house could very well be in trouble. As not being too savvy maybe a act to dump a truck with a problem. But it also could be a good deal especially as the price comes down it would be worth a 2nd look

very true I would hate to see that guy's mortgage. Give me a small house with a big garage and I'm set. He does seem to think his truck is super special, we will see if I can convince him otherwise. If that doesn't work I will let it sit for awhile, he's sure to lower the price if no one buys the thing for what he's asking. I will make sure nothing big is wrong with the truck, things like frame and major body rot. Everything else can be fixed in time. These trucks are kind of hard to come by not rotted out in the northeast.
