Whats the difference between Membership and subscription?

I paid for membership and got a notice about a subscription, whats the difference?

The Member role (upgraded Registered role) does not give you the full permissions of a paid Subscriber, but it does allow you the ability of uploading images to your post. Images size is limited, and you don't have access to the special forum areas and Articles.

We are doing this as we are seeing a resurgence in the use of Forums over the Social Media sites.
