Who is going when? I will have my usual arrival time of late Tuesday night.

Jay Good is probably already there....

Why is it that the inside of old truck cabs smell so good?

I will be arriving on Wednesday afternoon as usual. My question Gordon, are you bringing one of your elusive trucks as promised?

Gordon 2 traditions I will miss this year

no rally for me this year. New job start up!=) One of the traditions I will miss is renewing my PWA subscription in person. I will send payment via my "Bergen County Power Wagons" representative Dr. Pieter Vleit of the Mopar Maintainence Institute, but it's not the same as pulling up a chair at your table and shootin the breeze. You made me feel welcome and at ease my first rally. The 2nd tradition is beating Indiana Ron at the teeter board, after he told me his secret method! haha

              Well, here's the plan

Spence and I hope to arrive in Fairfield early Wednesday morning and be at the fairgrounds about the time Registration opens. That is the plan anyway.

In reality, this is more like what can be expected:

              1) Get out of bed at 4:30 A.M. Wednesday morning, expecting to be on the road by 6:00 A.M. and in Fairfield by 8:00 A.M.

              2) Exchange stories over breakfast, and then more stories, and finally make it out to the garage around 8ish.

              3) Load up the trucks with everything I planned on loading the day before, but got sidetracked telling stories instead.

              4) Give the trucks a final greasing and fluid level check. (I had planned to do this the weekend before, but I got busy tightening the loose headliner screws instead.)

              5) Drive both trucks to the gas station and spend 2 hours talking with the locals who act like it is the first time they have seen either the trucks, me, or Spence.

              6) Exchange stories.

              7) Leave the gas station about 11ish. Turn around 2 miles down the road and go back and pay for the gas that I had pumped 2 hours earlier. (The gas station attendant about faints when she sees me coming as she was resigned to paying for the gas out of her own pocket just to get rid of us in order to make room for customers. She knows the story well - "Here we go again.")

              8) Spend a half hour talking to Dad who just happened to see us at the gas station and stopped in to say "Have a good trip".

              9) Get back on the road an finally arrive in Fairfield 3 hours later. (We took it slow because of the heat of the day.)

              10) Stop at gas station on former Route 34 in downtown Fairfield. Spend 1 hour talking to some folks in an M37 who have made it to their first Rally. Tell some stories.

              11) Arrive at motel and spend 2 hours talking to other Rally attendees in parking lot before checking in to room.

              12) Unload trucks and carry luggage, tool boxes, parts to trade, etc. into motel room and realize that Rally Registration is now closed for the day (it is about 6:00 P.M.)

              13) Leave Motel room to go get some Supper. (Had only a Coke for Dinner earlier in the day while on the road.)

              14) Do a U-turn when we see Gene Buch. Tell stories with him a while and finally decide to all go to supper about 8:00 P.M.

              15) Arrive back at the motel around 10 and spend the next 3 hours catching up with everyone and telling stories with other Rally attendees under the street lamp.

              16) Swat knats and mosquitos and pull a muscle in shoulder in the process.

              17) Finally go to bed at 1:00 A.M. Thursday morniing totally exhausted and covered with bug bite welts.

              18) Get out of bed at 4:30 A.M. Thursday morning expecting to get a hot breakfast and be at the Fairgrounds to register by 8:00 A.M................

                Gordon,

I'll be there late Tuesday afternoon, but things won't be as exciting as Clints. (:

                  Been here a week already

I got in last Thursday. A few details I did get at a prerally meeting was menu items.

Bubba Q Dinner Ollie, IA, Wednesday, June 10
Award winning beef brisket that has been rubbed with Bubba-Q's dry rub and slow cooked with oak and hickory logs to peak tenderness then hand cut.. Served both slab and chopped. Candied Carrots seasoned and sweetened with brown sugar and butter. Cheesy potatoes from a blend of cheddar cheese sauce, seasoned diced potatoes and bits of bacon. Desserts - yet to be determined but something perfect to top off a great BBQ.

                  Banquet Saturday, June 13
Slilced Eye of Round Beef in Cabernet Sauce, Chicken Cordon Bleu, parsley buttered potatoes, corn, peas and carrots, salad bar, rolls and butter, Yummy's cake ( I have had these and their great )

Weather has been hot till today when it cooled down and lots of rain.
                  More later

                    Westward Ho!

Looks like I will be able to make the trip to my first Rally in Iowa. Although both of my trucks are in my shop (53 M37) or in pieces (the 51 B3), they will have to stay behind and await my return. I'm looking forward to meet other Power Wagon enthusiasts, learn alot and as I've joined the ranks of the unemployed, use the time to the best of use and get my truck's back on the road again where they belong.

I'm not sure about the lodgin' part of the experience, motel or maybe drive my Fix Or Repair Daily with its truck cap and go the campground and sleepin bag route. Anyone have recommendations to offer? Hope to meet you all at the rally! Vern

Vern, you'll have a good time at the rally. You're only a stranger until you tell someone your name then you're part of the family. It's a great place to learn, exchange stories and ask for help on a truck. Don't be afraid to ask for a ride on the events like a trail ride someone always has room for one more. Be sure to bring a camera to record the rally and trucks. VPW is the mecca for PW owners and it will take a while to see all that they offer. As for lodging if you haven't reserved a room by now it's doubtful you will find a room. But you never know someone may cancel. The two best are the Super 8 and the Best Western. You can join others out back of the fairgrounds if you want to camp which is what I did on my first rally. Be aware that this is Iowa and it does rain and storm out there so be prepared. Look for a bright red 59 Power Giant and stop by to say hello. I'll be there Wednesday afternoon.

                          My first rally!

Looks like I will be going to my first PW rally. I will not be bringing one of my m37's, as they are in parts and pieces. It sounds like I will be able to get all kinds of info and maybe a few parts that I need. I'll be pulling into town late Thursday or early Friday in my trusty ol' blue '95 Cummins powered Dodge with my motel room in the back (slide in camper).

Gordon, did the good doctor keep my tradition and subscription alive?
