I have a '66 slant 6 with automatic out of a D-100. Runs and is in frame rails. Also have a 4spd. from a 64 W-300 which i belive to be an NP420. Free to clean up the yard. In central MD.

I Must Be Getting Old
Sorry, Paul, I must be getting old or something. I already have too many NP420s. At least 3, including the one in my running M37. What I'm looking for is a later 4 speed, with full synchros. There's something about the word FREE, that causes some of us to lose our sense.

I know the feeling
I've come to realize there is only so much room for spares, and for as long as the drivelines last in these trucks, even with moderate abuse, I don't need to hold on to 3 or 4 everything. I spare of each should be enough.

420 trans
hi, just wandering if you still had the transmission around; i'm looking for a grannylow 4speed for my 77 1ton and yours might work. actually i'd like to mate it to a 360 LA engine if possible, i don't know for sure if it would mate up, but it might. let me know, thanks.

I don't want to discourage you but, the NP 420 is not a synchronized transmission. It does have a granny low and will bolt up to the same bellhousing as the newer NP 435. It is still available. e-mail me at pmblakita@haywardbaker.com.

thanks for replying.i know the granny low is nonsynchro, but if the other gears are , it might shift okay- i use the truck for towing sometimes and it needs a stout manual trans. i have an aluminum 435 bellhousing; you said it will bolt up okay; i assume the bearing retainer is the same diameter? is the input shaft length and tip diameter same as a later 435/833? if so, it should fit a later motor like a 360/318. I have several motors i could put in front of it(318/360/383/400/440) but i would really love to put a 360 in the truck; however some of them have crankshafts drilled for(or already have installed) the manual bushing, some don't. And, my 435 bellhousing is only for smallblocks. my 360 is drilled, but needs the busshing.also, you have to be careful about the flywheel(internal vs. external balance). do you think this might be doable? also, is the trans usable now, or would it need to be rebuilt? also, what motor was in the vehicle originally? thanks for your time-paul

There are universal Mopar crank pilot bushings used with both the auto and manual crank version of the SBC.
53009180 – new #: 9188B $13.74 (needle bearing version)
4338876 - $6.90 (bronze inner bushing version)

I also heard that you can use a 29/32" drill bit to enlarge the hole in the crank to the proper size to fit the bushing. I would just get the bushing from a Mopar car/truck dealership.
So, no excuse to not use the 360 with a manual trans - other than balancing the flywheel.
