Recently bought a '60's era Brown & Sharpe #2 Universal Milling Machine. Needs a good cleaning and going over and a few missing parts and it should be ready to work. Have been unable to find any sites or info on the net about these machines. Anybody know of any or who sells parts for these machines? Anybody ever use one of these universal machines? Main piece missing is the indexing head, foot stock and head drive mechanism.

B & S Milling machine
A universal milling machine has a table which rotates and has power feeds in the X and Y directions driven by a gear mechanism off a second motor. The dividing head, which unfortunately missing, can be driven by another gear mechanism at the right side of the table and is syncronized to the table movement. These features alows helical gears and worm gears to be cut. The mill also has a horizontal milling shaft as well as a removable verticle head; the verticle head can be tilted. These machines are very stout and are capable of doing any job a milling machine can do.
I've been looking for a milling machine for some time; mostly at auctions. I saw this one advertised at a vehicle junk yard auction. It was the only macnine tool up for auction so no one else there was interested in this item and I got it for a very low price. Cost me more to have it moved that to buy it. Weighs about 2 tons. It is rather dirty as it was stored in the body shop garage and is covered with sanding dust and overspray. The fellow at the yard, who originally bought it said he got it about 10 years ago from a hospital shop for some jobs he planned to do; but he never used it. The table and ways are in very nice shape.

Denis,
Couple of websites that may help:

www.machinerybrochures.com
I think B&S sold the machinery group to another large machine tool company so that would be the best place for parts. I'll do some surfing and ask around our tool shop here at work. It would be great if you could find a local screw machine company or someone similar that is still using B&S since they might provide some leads.
I also urge you to really scrub your mill if it's been sitting that long with no activity. Most of them have oilers that lube the ways and lead screws, which all need to be functioning. Get one of those small pump-up sprayers and fill it with mineral spirits, then start soaking and wire brushing. It'll make a mess so do it outside if you can. Good luck - you found a treasure...Hollis
