  • 4BT update....

Well..... The 4BT arrived today. I was told it would be a frame cut out, with the frame sections, the whole unit steam cleaned, and in a crate. It was pulled out of the truck, and judging by the broken pallet boards, literally dropped on the pallet. The 700 pound engine rode it's entire journey resting on the turbo and the alternator.

They strapped the radiator to the side of the engine, right on the motor mount, and theres a hole through the radiator because of it. I was quoted $291 to ship it here, and the bill turned out to be $535.12, but the freight company is going to work with me on the extra $139 freight.

Well enough of that. The engine appears to be in good shape. No visible damage. It's a remanufactured engine Model 4BT-A.
It has the adapter for the T400. I pulled that off and was lucky enough to be able to sell the adapter, flexplate, and starter locally to a fellow wanting to put a 6BT in a Chevy C-60 dump truck.

I was also very lucky to find a used SAE#3 flywheel housing for $100 locally at a truck repair shop. It came out of a Motor Home that used a 6BT as a power plant. With a SAE#3 flywheel, I will be able to bolt a Spicer 3053A Transmission on to the back of this engine. The 3053A is a 5 speed overdrive out of a M35 6x6 army truck.

I found new SAE#3 flywheels locally (well, in Oregon anyways) for $350 each. If you order these parts from Cummins, the Flywheel housing is $1200, and the Flywheel is $800, so I'm quite happy with my good fortune there.

I also found good used takeout (U-pull-em) 3053A's With clutch assemblies, and all related parts locally for $125 each. No PTO's unless you buy the complete winch assemblies though.

I still need to purchase a SAE#3 starter, and figure out how to do the clutch. The 3053 comes with a mechanical, but I think I would want to go Hydraulic. I'm sure there's going to be a bunch more miscellaneous parts to find. I still need to get a conversion joint to join the trannie to the transfer case, and a pilot bearing for the flywheel.

I hope that nothing major happened during shipping. It should be really sweet when done. I have been tempted to drop a diesel in my PW and still havent threw the idea out. btu money is my issue. Good luck!

I dig that idea and I'm also thinking about doing that, so if you have any helpful tips or how it went, putting it together, I would appreciate it a lot. That's going to be one bad truck.

I'm new here...that is music to my ears. I'm no stranger to mechanical work...but never repowered anything. It will be part of my restoration when I find a truck I like. I'm book marking your website now.
