  • Perkins diesels problem in Iraq

    working here in Iraq, Got a problem that maybe you folks can help out with I am trying to get massive greater then 1500KVA 12cylinder straight perkins diesel up, it was run out of fuel and I have solved the fuel issues, cracked the send and return lines to the injector and cycled it through it still wont start. any ideas

    Have you run it until the pump is squirting fuel? Even after cracking the lines to bleed off the air, you need to run the pump with the outlet fitting slightly loose and crank until it leaks, you may have to do this at each injector also to remove any trapped air locks may be present.

      Air bleeding procedure

      Not sure exactly which fuel system your Perkins has on it as more than 1 type was used. The ones I've dealt with have a bleed screw that is actually on the injector pump body for letting air locks off the pump itself. Once this is right, then move on to the high pressure injector lines at the injector. Loosen each line nut 1 at the time while spinning the engine over till you get a pure stream of fuel at each injector. It should crank unless you have other issues.

        Frogman, you will need to do as Norm suggested and bleed each fuel line at the indivdual injector. Do not roll the engine with the starting system unless it is not equiped with a hand pump. There may also be a return line back to the fuel tank that you should open when hand pumping. Open the cylinder test valves if you use the starting system, and do not let the engine run until all the injectors are bled.

        This engine will run on less than half its cylinders firing, and the fuel is the cooling medium to keep the injector tips from burning. After starting the engine check the exhaust temperature of each cylinder to determine if you have a bad injector. If its cool you may not be getting enough fuel, or too hot indicating a fouled tip, and you will need to change them.

          Yes I did all those we had good fuel pressure at all injectors.
          we ran out of light and i didnt want to work under a spotlight this genny sits out in the open. this thing uses 150 ltrs an hour
          I am thinking there is some kind of electrical lock out and maybe a relay that has to be reset, of course no TO for this unit and the local that works on it may have been picked up by bad guys.

            Are you refering to the small hand(finger)pump (primer)near the rack? there seems to be no pressure build up on this and with the injectors cracked no fuel flows when pumping, no resistance there either. this thing has less then 20hours on the clock, and I have minimal tools. where is the relase valve? Bad I know idont have any specs, going back tommorw, with anyluck the generator fairies will have come fix it!

              Without a manual you will have to improvise and use your good trouble shooting skills. What shut down indicator lights are on the control panel. Are any lit? They all trip the fuel solenoid, usually low lube oil pressure, high jacket water temp, and overspeed. Over cranking the engine when shut down can cause the overspeed trip to activate. You can find each of these on the engine and jump them out locally, or in the panel, or you could go straight to the fuel shut down solenoid and jump it (or power it). Hope this helps.

                When you say rack, I assume you have a fuel rack to stroke individual cylinder injection pumps for each cylinder. There should be some type of manual fuel pump located near the primary fuel pump on the engine. It could be a hand or finger pump. You will need to bleed the fuel lines to, and each injection pump. Each pump should have a bleed screw. After you have the pumps bled it sounds like you will need to roll the engine to bleed the lines from the injector pumps to the injectors. Located on or near each cylinder head you should see a test valve that you should open when rolling it over slowly. The outlet pipe of this valve would be threaded for a test gauge. Do them all at the same time.

                I have never worked on a Perkins as you have discribed, so these instructions are generic to most small high speed diesel engines. I do have many hours on many engines of this size and larger, up to 60,000 bhp.

                    Frogman,

                    I think the bleeder that sickcall is refering should look similar to a tire valve stem (at least on Internationals and some early Perkins it did).
