  • Multi Fuel Engines

not much talk about multi fueled engines.i have been using used oil mixed with diesel. my question is what ratio of oil to diesel fuel you guys using.also i guess its a good idea to mix oil with the diesel fuel thats out ther now.today i was at the transfer station and have been noticing that fewer people have been bringing in used oil. steve from western maine

Used oil in a fuel system, not good

Used oil isn't a good idea, the injector pump hydraulic head doesn't like today's low sulfur fuel, not enough lubrication to satisfy the need. There are a number of fuel supplement products available to help replace the lube lost by low sulfur. You will be much better off using a clean product rather than dirty used engine oil. You are dealing with a high cost item when your pump head is destroyed from running dirty product through it. The cleanest you can be sometimes seems not enough, don't press your luck, pump problems won't pass you by.

I agree 100% with Charles Talbert [as usual....]!

On anohter forum one of the guys was bragging about running used oil and we tried to warn him, nope, wouldn't listen. Some months later he was man enough to admit that his truck was down, fried injection pump, and was smoking like the rings were bad.

The ultra-hard microscopic carbon and metals, plus heavy metals, suspended in used oil are like emery granules to pump and engine internals. Absolute minimum for filtration is 0.5 micron, that is 1/2 micron, not 5, 10 or 20, and even that small particle filtering still doesn't guarantee success.

I agree with Charles and Jimmie. Motor oil also has detergents in it that could cause rubber O-rings and seals to swell in the injector pump and injectors. Used or new motor oil as a fuel additive is just not a good thing to do.
