Bec and I took the '49 Power Wagon to Lyman, Wyoming last Saturday to defend last year's first place pull in the Stock Light Gas division. We were the very first puller of the night, same as last year, and took the small sled a little over 130 feet. I had it in first gear and low range, with the tires aired down to 20 psi in the fronts and 16 psi in the rears. The engine was lugging pretty hard at the end, but the tires broke loose before I lost all power.
The second truck in this class was a mid-80's Chev. 1/2 ton with a hopped up 396, 4-speed and 4.56:1 gears in both locked up differentials. He powered out totally just over 100-feet into the run. This was his first ever pull, and he had it in 4th gear, high range - bad advice from another competitor (not me).
The final puller in this class was a 2007 Dodge Power Wagon with the 5.7L Hemi and automatic transmission. This guy took off very fast, shifted up one gear for a while, then downshifted toward the end of the run. He went over 270-feet to take first place. That Hemi power and automatic really helped him out.
The next truck pull is at the Utah State Fair in September. I'm already getting ready to make that event. The '49 Power Wagon got fifth place out of 10 competitors last year, and the crowd really loved the old truck.
