Well my dad and I had been driving by the M37 for several years , every time one of us would say"man I'd sure like to have that!" Well finally we stopped one day(it was parked in a trucking yard way over in the corner) we went inside and found out it was the owner's.
We talked to him and he wanted to sell it. $3500 was his asking price. He said he had just had the motor rebuilt but the dist. kept wobbling and he was fed up!
We were driving an old beater 76 3/4 ton suburban my dad and I used to four wheel in(prob. only worth about $1500), jokingly I said"hey, want to trade for the suburban?" He agreed to our suprise, and my dad and I took it home!
The great part was all she needed was a military oil pump insted of the civilian one they had put in and she was running great! My dad and I slowly kept fixing her up till she looks like she does now.
There is something about the history, nostalgia, (and the smell) just the overall sense of pride that comes from driving an old mil truck, I guess some people will never understand.
It's even better when you get to enjoy doing it with your dad, I'll never forget one time when we first got her running and my dad said"there's nothin like driving an old army truck!
