My uncle Eric, on my mom's side, was one of the typical family renegades. He purchased a 1977 Dodge W100 standard cab SWB new, a shiny black truck with 360-2bbl, 4 speed and tach. That summer, I was 9 and invited to go 'wheelin with my uncle's family. We loaded up, all the kids riding in the back of the truck, and headed for the San Bernardino Mountains in southern California. Basic fire road stuff until there was a mud pit to cross. We slowed down while my uncle chose a gear and then the engine revved up! What a sound! Then the truck turned brown. Fortunately, we (the kids) were under a truck cap and stayed dry and clean.
The chance for me came when I traded 2 Chevy LUV 4x4s for my first Dodge, a 1977 W300 dually service body. I haven't looked back much since then, having now had 7 Dodge trucks. My W300 was stolen and stripped, what a pity. :(
