  • Modern Oil Filters

A recent thread on favored lubricants left me wondering about oil filters.

There appear to be many "different colored" filters made by only a few manufacturers. So, are some filters better than others?

Absolutely. I'm more particular about the filter I use than the particular brand of oil I use.

There are also some good videos on Youtube showing dis-assembly of many of the various brands.

Like many things you get what you pay for. WIX filters are good, they make a few different other brands including the NAPA Gold (and probably the Silver as well), Purolator is a decent mid grade, but I avoid FRAM like the plague.

I like the K&N oil filters, good quality and the nut welded to the bottom is a great feature, but they're pricey, same goes for the Mobil 1 filters. I tend to use Purolator PureOne filters or NAPA Gold with conventional oil, and one of the higher end filters if I'm running synthetic.
